Debating Susan Boyle's makeover

Susan Boyle has had a makeover of sorts—an eyebrow pluck and a trim and color wash, apparently—and suddenly everyone has an opinion. Never mind that it's supposedly just a regular color wash and eyebrow pluck that she and her sisters usually do.

In fact, supporters and dissenters alike inundated the DailyMakeover.com when they provided three suggestions for Boyle's new look. Some posters were totally for it: I like the makeover because she looks very natural...just a bit more "polished," says one. She looks great with the bob. Its not a fundamental change in her character, its just maximizing her attributes. Most people, including Ms. Boyle, could use a makeover, chimes another.

But the backlash was much louder. Their opinions can be distilled into this one particularly irate take: This is absolutely disgusting. Why can't Susan be known for her inner beauty and talent? Who gives a flying f*ck about her hairstyle and outer appearance? Shallow, superficial, plastic Hollywood-blinded pigs, that's who.

I actually see both sides to this, but what I feel most strongly about is this: Why do we care so much about how she "ought" to look? If she wants to change, fine. If she doesn't, fine. But why are we so invested in her not changing? Isn't it a bit condescending the way we feel she ought to stay just the way she is, and yet most of us probably judged her for the way she looked—even if only just a one moment—when she walked onto the stage in that much-watched video clip? And if we didn't judge, we still probably anticipated the audience's derisive reaction.

Why is it okay to laugh at her and then vociferously argue that she should stay that way? (Actually, it was never okay to laugh at her to begin with, but you get my drift.) Frankly, it reeks of hypocrisy. Just my two cents and all that.

I completely agree with you that it should be entirely Susan’s choice if she wants to go for a make over. And also what type of a make over she wants. Why should we be discussing even? :-)
