CityMom had this fabulous idea to write about stuff, because as my friend Mark says, "Stuff is cool." And as I've mentioned, we strive to be careful consumers, which means we think a lot about, well, stuff. And we occasionally buy, or think about buying, some splendid items, as well as the occasional dud.
I'll kick our wants off with an object that tugs at me on several levels: A Bialetti Moka Elettrika. It's a new travel version of an old favorite, the Moka Express, a stovetop pot that makes a rich, espresso-like brew using a pressure system. Now, the Moka is beloved the world over; it's a constant in almost every Italian home, and its form-meets-function perfection has landed it in a few museums. No timers to set; no liners to buy; no watt-sucking electricals.
The Elettrika is the same issue, but on an electric base. It still makes a fast cup of coffee and is usable by folks like my mom who don't have a gas range. And it comes with an international power cable and adapter! So if I am suddenly called to, say, move to Brussels, or to spend a few months in China, I'll have my little Italian with me to caffeinate at a moment's notice. Mired in north Jersey, I'll remain ready to roam. Come with me, cara mia, Elettrika purrs, and live beautifully. Oh, and learn Italian.
Verdict: A total want.

I really want to purchase one of these as I travel for extended periods of time and am incoherent without my morning espresso. However I've searched the net far and wide and cannot locate any place that actually sells these. Any idea where I can buy one and have it shipped to US?

hox, contact bialetti at the number listed on their website:
bialettiusa.com
It's easily available in Italy, so you might be able to ask to have the USA divsion get one shipped from the main italian division.

As an Italian living in the Netherlands I need a good cup of coffee...and at home I got a Nespresso Machine and an old style moka. Currently in my office we have a bad, horrible Nescafe coffee machine...so I'll definetly try this electrical version :) . I'll let you know the outcome :))

I have been travelling with this machine the past 5 years. It went from Bali to Colombia, from South Africa to Finland. The first thing I pack when I travel. Great coffee every morning, anywhere.
I just ordered a new one, the travel set, the base is a bit cracked, and it is getting slow, but it stil works.
